Since the very beginning, open protocol lovers have said we have the tools to build an open alternative to Skype, but surprisingly it has not happen yet. What makes Skype so special? Is it possible (and viable) to build an open alternative to Skype?
Let's explore the needs we have and what current open protocols (SIP and XMPP) can offer us to build an open Skype.
